This is a fascinating album. The production is deep, varied and intricate, and compliments Gileads theological lyrical content very well, but what I love most about this album is it offers a thinking mans interpretation of those concepts, something that can be hard to find.

... Gilead7: A philosopher pursuing a PhD in philosophy of religion. Absent minded young adult. An MC/Producer with records all over the world. This partially sums up Chicago’s Gilead7, going from rapping in church basements over standard boom bap beginning over a decade ago to stages all around the country, making his own soundscapes rich with Celtic harps, Tori Amos chops, and his otherworldly drum patterns with alien raps. In the course of his career, he’s collaborated and shared stages with everyone from Listener (Mush Records/Deepspace 5), Maker (Fatbeats Records, Glue, Qwel, Galapagos4, etc.), Vast Aire, Offwhyte, Invincible, Phantom Thrett of OSA, and others, and was included among URB magazine’s Next 1000 to watch for in 2009. He has devoted his vocal offerings to Chicago producer/MC I. B. Fokuz, and came up with a musical masterpiece.
I.B. Fokuz: This young man is beyond is beyond words. All of 25 years old, he has given astounding vocal MC performances alongside Saul Williams, Percee P, Kool Herc, and a host of other local and international hip-hop legends. A member of the two man crew Jyroscope, I.B. self-produced their debut album, “Ragtime,” and has also self-produced two solo albums prior to this. He possesses an MC style reminiscent of the last of the backpack generation with a slickness and swagger able to move any crowd, and is equipped with a gritty, ethereal production sound utilizing the darkness and reality of Chicago’s south side, transmitting it into an aesthetic beauty listeners can intake and use to change the world. You can hear his work in the skies of McDonalds commercials and in the basements of the most grimy and lyrical stages in Chicago's underground. I.B. encountered Gilead7’s first album entitled “The Darkroom,” and approached him about his desire to produce his next project. ADVENT was born.
ADVENT: A MODERN BIBLE: Theology can be defined as the quest to refine religious traditions so that they continue to be relevant to an ever changing world. Gilead7’s content from his beginnings in hip-hop culture has been an attempt to do just that. ADVENT: A MODERN BIBLE is a constantly unraveling process of reflection on the idea of ultimacy (God) from all angles and the matching of this reflection with the actual motion of the world right now. The album, totally produced by I. B. Fokuz, poses questions of how religions can answer issues of ecological justice (“A Shade Above Black,” feat. Malakh), sexual morality and ethics (“My Girl and I”), theories of evolution as opposed to intelligent design (“Genesis 1 G7AV”), nihilism and self-destruction (“Suicide Note”), and just how to be a good MC and constructively battle bite rappers who lack the talent (“Gist”). Overall, ADVENT: A MODERN BIBLE is the first installment of Gilead7 and I.B. Fokuz’s diving into the idea of the mystery of “God,” and how this mystery is inseparably connected to the joy and pain of the universe. Crowds who have heard it go wild for it, and are thought-provoked. This is art through which you can look at and chance the totality of the world (possibly). It awaits a world audience.
